NUTLEY BOWLING CLUB
I am sure everyone will have enjoyed playing this year despite the problems brought on by the never ending rain
The Green
The very wet winter of 2023/4 made the preparation of the green for the season more difficult. The season did not get off to a good start because of the rain. After just the first game at home we felt the playing surface was unsafe and with the co- operation of other clubs we played our earlier games away, giving us time to sort out our drainage problem.
Initially we drilled 24 deep drainage holes of 4 inch diameter and another 15 holes of 2 Inch diameter across the green at the far end. Once the weather improved we were able to play the rest of the season for our home games. Our thanks go the members of our Tuesday club for all the work undertaken.
More work by the Tuesday club during the winter 2024/5 has installed a land drain along the length of the green which it is hoped will further help.
The short mat bowls evening 23rd Feb
This event was staged at the Nutley Memorial Hall on 23 February and was a great success.
It was a social event- not at all competitive and a bit of fun. We had 2 mats down and all the equipment needed and we all “had a go”.
The Alf Sayers Tournament consists of rounds of Triples played in two sections with a final to complete the day. There were 12 Teams entering from around the County. The teams get very well looked after with tea or coffee available all day with a break in the middle for lunch for which we produced our highly popular picnic eaten outside under the shelter of the marquees, followed at the end of the day with a Cream Tea. The day before the tournament is preparation day with all hands on board helping to put up our brand new Marquees this is always accompanied by the usual banter and hilarity. Sunday dawned warm and dry with almost no wind. What a change from last year’s gales, so no worries this year about being blown away. Due to the strong winds last year most of our old marquees were damaged, these were replaced thanks to our very generous sponsors who supported us this year, namely LDB Wealth Management, Lampon Lets, Wilmoths & Mansell McTaggart. We had a fantastic day thanks to all club members (and some partners) who helped with the scoring, bar, marshalling, catering and general running of the day. All teams expressed how much they had enjoyed the tournament, appreciating everything that had been done to make it run so smoothly and for all the trouble we had taken to keep them safe. The eventual winners were Sue Walter’s team ‘Losers’ from Buxted with Eileen Morris’s team ‘Stags’ also from Buxted coming a worthy runner up. It was a great final that needed 1 extra end to decide.
The annual quiz evening 5th October
Once again Mike Evans organised this annual event at the Nutley Memorial Hall on 5th October. This has been a popular event in our calendar for many years and has always been supported by many other bowls clubs as well as friends and family. This year we had 18 teams which is the maximum number we can accommodate in the hall. The evening went well, was very enjoyable with sandwiches provided in the half way interval. The raffle also helped the evening along.
